Join designer, author, and modern quilter Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade for a month of exploring the art of chicken scratch embroidery. Chicken scratch is a charming form of cross stitch that is worked on gingham fabric and creates an optical illusion of a beautiful lace overlay. Blair teaches you the foundations of chicken scratch, such as selecting your gingham fabric and using a paper template to mark your fabric, plus essential stitches like the smyrna cross and the snowflake stitch. Throughout the month, play with different designs, various combinations of stitches, and multiple colors. As you stitch inside your gingham squares, discover how much freedom you have to get creative. At the end of month, Blair shows you how to sew together your chicken scratch fabric pages and assemble a sample book that you can use as a record of all the new techniques you learned as well as a reference for future projects like aprons, tea towels, quilts, pillows, and whatever else you can imagine.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Two yards total of 1/4" gingham fabric in various colors
- Iron and ironing surface
- Size 3 embroidery needles
- Six-strand embroidery thread like DMC in various colors
- Beeswax or thread conditioner
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat or fabric scissors
- Thread snips (optional)
- Ruler
- 2-3 colors of fabric marking pens such as Frixion pen or chalk pencil
- 6" embroidery hoop
- Sewing machine with neutral thread
- Micron pen
- Scrap of white fabric 8 1/2 x 11
- 6 x 8" fabric for binding
- Tapestry needle
- Pokey tool
- Binder clips

This was great - fun to do and so many possibilities to play with. The sample book is such a fantastic idea. Thank you.
I hope there'll be another class on this - maybe something on using the designs in projects - planning and design with lots of examples and maybe a tray or table cloth to teach us about how to plan border designs around corners

This is a great class! Blair is a very good teacher. I had never heard of Chicken Scratch Embroidery. Absolutely fell in love with the stitches and all of the weaving techniques!
