Taught by Ashley Nickels, this fun, freestyle project features log cabin patchwork and offers a great opportunity to work with precut fabric. Perfectly Pixelated Jelly Roll Quilt
Ashley Nickels
Ashley Nickels shares a simple, modern approach to designing your own pixelated jelly roll quilt top, with lots of time-saving tricks built into the process. You will learn how to lay out your quilt on a design wall, and then chain-piece the squares without having to pin or clip. Best of all, there’s no ironing until the very end, so you can speed through the piecing process in a flash. Ashley demonstrates this process on a crib-sized quilt top, but it’s easy to make this quilt smaller or larger—after all, you’re the designer.
Machine Quilting Basics
Sue Nickels
If you’re ready to jump into quilting with your home sewing machine, this workshop is for you. Sue shows you how to get the best results at home, using straight line stitching with a walking foot. She covers how to secure your starts so your stitching is secure, and how to handle the bulk of a quilt on a home machine. Sue teaches you how to straight line stitch on a grid, as well as stitching in the ditch for pieced quilts. This workshop will have you machine quilting with confidence in no time!
Quilt Finishing and Binding
Sue Nickels
Now that you have machine or hand quilted your quilt, it’s time to finish it. Sue shows you how to block and trim your quilt so you are working with a quilt that is square and lays perfectly flat. Then she shows you how to add straight double binding with mitered corners and join the binding for a clean join. Finish with a sleeve if you are going to hang your work, and add a label to document the date of your masterpiece.
Quilt Sandwich
Sue Nickels
Prepare your quilt top for quilting at home with this workshop on assembling a quilt sandwich. You’ll start by planning your quilting designs, then learn how to mark simple straight lines as well as common quilting motifs such as feathers and cables. Next you will assemble the quilt sandwich, then Sue will show you how to pin baste your quilt. That step can be dreaded by quilters but it is a critical part of setting up for successful quilting, and Sue will guide you through the process with patience and expert tips.
Learn Raw Edge Appliqué Quilting
Sue Nickels
Learn all about raw edge machine appliqué with quilting expert, Sue Nickels. In this class, Sue shares her signature technique for assembling a vibrant, floral appliqué quilt top. Each piece of appliqué uses just a bit of fusible web to keep it in place, and is then secured permanently with machine blanket stitching. You will learn how to stitch inner and outer points as well as curves and circles, complex units, and bias stems. This class will teach you everything you need to know to work any machine-appliqué pattern, large or small.

How to Make Binding Tape
Ashley Nickels
Custom-made binding tape adds a gorgeous finishing touch to your quilts, allowing you to play around with colors and prints. Binding tape is typically used to bind quilts and can be made with fabric that has been cut on the straight of grain. Ashley Nickels demonstrates how to create your own binding tape using any fabric you like and sew the strips together to create one long strip to go all around your quilt. Watch Ashley's class on attaching binding tape to find out how to sew it to your quilt.
How to Attach Binding Tape
Ashley Nickels
Quilting designer Ashley Nickels demonstrates the traditional method for attaching binding tape to a quilt — a fundamental technique every quilter needs to know. Step by step, you will learn how to pin the binding to the quilt sandwich, attach it using the walking foot on your sewing machine, create mitered corners, join the ends of the binding, and finish with a hand-sewn blind stitch. Watch Ashley's How to Make Binding Tape class for a quick lesson on how to make your binding strips and sew them together.
How to Chain Piece Fabric
Ashley Nickels
Learn how to construct a nine-patch quilt block using one of Ashley Nickel’s favorite short cuts: chain piecing. Prepare and cut your nine fabric squares and learn how to piece them together row-by-row without ever snipping threads. You’ll then learn how to sew your chained pieces together by nestling the seams. With this trick up your sleeve, you’ll end up with a flawless nine-patch quilt block in a flash.
How to Stitch in the Ditch
Ashley Nickels
“Stitching in the ditch” is an essential sewing and quilting technique that anchors your layers in place and creates clean seams on the right side of your sewing. Like the name implies, ditch-stitching is as simple as sewing along your seam lines. Ashley Nickels demonstrates how it’s done in this short tutorial.
How to Sew Potholders
Ashley Nickels
Dip your toe into the wild waters of quilting with these two simple potholder projects. Modern quilter Ashley Nickels shows you how to make a basic potholder using solid squares of fabric and pre-made bias tape, or a slightly more complex patchwork potholder using homemade binding tape. You will learn about basting, chain piecing and different styles of quilting, plus pro tips for attaching the binding.
