Creating your own stencil for hand-printing fabric is surprisingly simple and lends a personal touch to this easy-to-sew bag. In this quick class, designer and artist Anna Joyce walks you through creating and working with stencils as well as fun sewing techniques for working with gussets, zippers and leather. As a bonus, the materials needed for this project will set you up for countless future stenciling endeavors.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- A cotton canvas drop cloth to cover the entire surface of the table, for protecting the surface.
- 8” x 8” squares of canvas to test colors (optional)
- Sharp pencil
- One roll of adhesive stencil film (Anna uses Martha Stewart Crafts brand)
- Transfer paper
- PDF template for the stencil pattern
- Artist tape or Martha Stewart Crafts 3/4” stencil tape
- Multi-Surface Acrylic Craft Paint in 2 colors (Anna uses Martha Stewart Crafts brand)
- Two 10 1/2” x 7.5”pieces of cotton canvas
- Two 10 1/2” x 4” pieces of leather
- One 14” zipper with plastic teeth in a fun color
- Flat acrylic painters palette or ceramic dish
- Foam Daubers for stenciling
- Collins Brand Wash Away Wonder Tape
- Self-healing cutting mat
- X-Acto knife
- 14” long acrylic ruler
- Jar of water for cleaning daubers
- Cotton rag or paper towels for cleaning up
- Sewing machine
- Leather needle
- All-purpose thread to match the canvas and the leather
- Iron and ironing surface
- Straight pins
- Sharp Scissors
- Pinking shears (optional)
