The habit of keeping a sketchbook is an important exercise, whether you are deepening your artistic practice or starting a brand new one. In this series, Lisa Congdon delves into her personal practice, sharing techniques that she employs in her own mixed media sketchbook. Best of all, you won’t be limited to one medium. Lisa explores ways to incorporate pen, watercolor, collage, brush pens, and more, allowing you to play with techniques that go beyond your comfort zone. Materials for Part 1: Watercolor Backgrounds and Line Drawing
- Mixed media sketchbook (Lisa uses Strathmore sketchbooks with watercolor paper or thick mixed media paper)
- Gluestick
- Watercolors in a variety of colors
- Gouache in neon colors
- Paintbrushes in a variety of sizes (Lisa uses a flat-tipped paintbrush)
- Jar of water
- Paper towels
- Micron pen (size 08 or 05)
- “Found” papers for collage (such as old letters or book pages)
- Solid-colored paper (Lisa uses green)
- Scissors
- Acid-free glue stick or wet glue and brush
- Wet paper towel
- Micron pen (size 1 and 05)
- Water-based brush pens in a variety of bright colors and medium gray (Lisa uses Koi Watercolor Brush Pens)
- White gel pen (Lisa uses Sakura Souffle)
- Watercolors in a variety of colors
- Paper towels
- Jar of water
- Flat-tipped paintbrushes
- Watercolor paper (Lisa uses 9” x 12” Strathmore paper)
- Micron pen (size 05)
